Speaking of which, I happened to catch Mr. Oldman in Immortal Beloved on cable recently. Not sure just how factual it is as a bio, but the performances were good and the music (conducted by Sir Georg Solti) was swooningly gorgeous as it should be. Oldman's Beethoven is an absolute asshole, but perhaps that is as it should be. Whether or not it's because I have some noticeable impairment in one ear or not,  I really think the film captures the heartbreaking tragedy of Beethoven's deafness effectively. I was crying during the scene in which the 9th Symphony is premiered. Well worth checking out.

I always blub at that point.

(My imagination always brings me to tears in fear, lest I should ever become deaf.)

What causes blubbing at the close of Symphony No. 9 in the film is the way Oldman emotes Beethoven's surprise at the audience's adulation. Finally, after decades of pain and struggle, his mastery is exuberantly acknowledged.

[sigh] Now I'm going to have to rent the film, dammit...
