Forwarded by my taiko sensei who is familiar with the organization:
The Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California has been around for over 30 years and was one of the most efficient and helpful American charities during the Kobe earthquake in 1995. Every penny donated is wired directly to volunteers in Japan where it is used to purchase supplies (food, blankets, etc.) So your money is not wasted on American taxes, no shipping cost for bulky items, and JCCCNC does not take anything for administrative costs or publicity.
(So of course, I send this information to my company's HR department and am informed that We Only Go Through United Way, which is why all United Way gets out of me is four boxes of quick bread mix under duress during the annual drive. Feh.)
Semi relatedly, Shannon-sensei suggested that whenever we end up doing our next recital, we talk it up among friends and family, saying admission is free but we are accepting donations for disaster relief in Japan - 'cause you know that even if we don't perform until June, relief efforts will still be needed.
Semi-relatedly, I had posted the above information to the kingdom e-list and got a message from someone who wanted to raffle off a sword he'd made for the late Senkyu, with the proceeds to Japanese relief, and did I have any ideas since he didn't think he could legally run a raffle. No, I Don't Know Everything. I suggested he contact the JCCNC or maybe a local Buddist church as they may already have the appropriate legal status to run fundraising raflles and would probably be happy to work with him on it.

Taiko continues. Taiko-robics and the first "verse" of "Yodon," with no fatalities, though Josh was nursing a hyperextended elbow and Tracy's knee was bothering her a little. (I continue to wear my brace, more to remind me not to torque my knee in the wrong direction than to actually support it.) I out-and-out told Shannon-sensei to feel free to ding on me about my form: I can't see what I'm doing and he can. I know this is a parks and rec program, he and Sean-sensei don't want to scare anyone away and that's certainly part of why the atmosphere over at the O Club is so positive. At the same time, he occasionally does say something to me and it does help and honest, I can take it. My memorization of the music is not at issue, my ability to pick up elements of a new routine as we drill and my retention are fine, so yes, let's work on the form, by all means.

There's some new blood on the Tousando. Increasingly I miss the presence of The Bushi from Mutsu and The Bushi from the Outlands. It's a sad state of affairs when I'm answering armor questions. Admittedly, it's pretty much along the lines of pointing people at previous discussion threads or web references, but it would be nice if some of the more militaria-knowledgeable folks were around a little more often. I'm lookin' at you
