Glory was on cable while I was eating dinner, so I put it on for awhile. There's this scene where Col. Shaw (Matthew Broderick) picks out a new recruit who's got years of squirrel huntin' under his belt, and starts yelling at him to reload, faster, faster, faster, borrows the Captain's revolver and starts firing it behind the now-flustered recruit. The lesson: these men aren't soldiers yet.

Hmm, I thought. There's a nearly identical scene in The Last Samurai. So I come upstairs after the credits roll and sure enough, both films were directed by Ed Zwick. Zwick has a writing credit on Samurai, though not on Glory.

Gettysburg is on TMC this evening, but it's four hours long. Not gonna even try on a week night. Don't get me wrong, I saw it in the theatre and thought it was good, but not tonight.

EDIT: Bite the Bullet was on Encore Western. Hadn't seen it in years and I was pleased that it still holds up and I still love Gene Hackman's tough little buckskin cow pony.

One of the things that really jumped out at me in Gettysburg was how the Southern generals never (or very rarely) used contractions. Their speech was old-fashioned and courtly, and yet strangely familiar.

Then I realized: that was how my grandfather used to speak. He was from Mississippi, but well-educated (he went to West Point) and in those days, the well-educated did not use contractions.

Great film--never felt long to me. The sequel (Gods and Generals) was awful, though.

OK, I haven't read any of the Charlaine Harris oeuvre, but it strikes me that the same is true in Stephen Moyer's portrayal of Bill.

Some of the dialogue in the recent "True Grit" and "Appaloosa" has a similarly old fashioned, if less polished rhythm to it.

"Gettysburg" is terrific. I particularly liked Jeff Daniels as Col. Chamberlain, and I wouldn't mind seeing it again if I had a Sunday afternoon I could devote to the long haul.

The True Blood books are, well, trashy fun. They read like bad romances, but are very, very funny--especially if you grew up down South. (As in "OMG, I know these people...")

I remember that Bill was said to have "old-fashioned speech" but it's been a few years since I read the books. I think Stephen Moyer deliberate dropped the contractions, though.

Man, I have got to see that new "True Grit" movie. Everyone says it's good.
