Date: 2011-04-28 04:08 pm (UTC)(This instrument is part of my daily "auditory roulette" - I never know if I am going to hear oboe, erhu, pan pipe, hammer dulcimer or something else as I reach the concourse level of the BART station.)
I think the same person is frequently at the Embarcadero and Montgomery BART stations.
I do not recall whether the instrument is Chinese or Japanese (but will google it shortly, now that I have a name for it).
