Napped, nursed my elbow and uploaded some pictures from the Asian Art Museum.

Due to space constraints and the practical issue of rotating delicate works that may be damaged by too much exposure to light, the museum regularly swaps paintings, textiles and other items in the permanent collection galleries, so it's generally worth visiting every few months to see what's new.

Here are a few pretties from yesterday.

She reminds me of me! This is a detail from a 13th c. hanging scroll titled "Poetry Contest Between Poets of Different Periods: Ise and Fujiwara Kiyosuke."

My readings on tea inform me that Chinese utensils were highly prized by the Japanese. The later development of the concept of wabi (simplicity) is a rejection of a more opulent aesthetic. That said, this Song dynasty tea bowl knocked me out when I first saw it during the Lords of the Samurai show awhile back. I was pleased to find it in a case up on the 3rd floor where I could get several shots of the stunning "oil spot" glaze. (I photographed a couple other Song dynasty bowls as well. Might come in handy if I do that history-of-tea class for Collegium.

Some calligraphy for [livejournal.com profile] didjiman by Yamaoka Tesshu (19th c.)

The text is the Song of Eight Drunken Immortals and you can read the text here. If veritas is in vino, so, at least in China, is poesis.

The rest of the set can be viewed here.
