I think I prefer the original, and here is why: having the grass and bit of road, plus the hint of treetops gives it grounding and a sense of place. Whereas the other one is purely abstract.
In a way, in the cropped one, you literally can't see the forest for the trees.
What Reynardine says makes sense, but for some reason, my first reaction was to like the abstract-ness of the second photo. The first feels... kind of boring to me. I wonder if I'd like it better if the white road stripe could be cg'd out, as it keeps catching my eye as it's totally non-organic and not like the rest of the pic. However, it does give some contrast, which makes it more interesting. It's funny; the longer I look, the more I think I like the first one.
That said, if I had the second image, I think I'd want to display it like this, were I to frame it:
I'm not sure why, but it just appeals to me that way more than vertically. It'd look neat printed large and framed above a fireplace or something.
I like the original better than the cropped version shown, but I also find the bit of road intrusive. Maybe if it were cropped from a point about 1/3 of the way up the edge of the pavement?

YMMV.
Only my opinion
