Oh my foes and oh my friends, as we all must, I know that some day I will die. If, upon that occasion, some well meaning but misguided person (who will, of course, be some well meaning but misguided SCA-dian) says, "Let's make a shrine," please dissuade him/her. I would be mortified. My family would be mortified.

Do not use my passing by commemorating a Memorial Challenge, or worse, a Competition in my name. If people aren't inspired by my presence now, they damn well better not use my absence as an excuse.

I would have to haunt someone - and remember, I'm partial to Japanese ghost stories.

Update. No, I have not yet posted my thoughts on eulogies and bereavements in the forum where it needs to be posted. People over there need some time before they're ready to read it. (See, I'm not completely insensitive.)

I think with some judicious editing it could be okay. If you focused on the "tell someone today" aspect it would be gentle, non-specific and nobody would feel like they were being accused of anything. If you were not going to post at all, I was going to check and see if you'd mind me posting the following.

*Many of us are reeling from the loss of two friends in rapid succession. With that sorrow comes regret. "I wish I'd told her X." "Why didn't I ever say thank you for Y?" We wait to say things that are important and then sometimes the sand in the hourglass runs out.

Life is short, folks. The rocks we lean on can be taken from us in a moment. If you love someone, if you honor them or are grateful to them or are just plain glad they are in your life, tell them. Say the words. Think about what you'd say about them if they were gone and tell them now. Celebrate their life before it ends.*

This sounds like a challenge to me, to praise you to your (virtual) face. Were I not standing watch with my husband while we wait for the pathology results, I would be up to it, certainly.

Would you take a rain-check?

Not a challenge so much as a dire warning. For every genuine mourner in the SCA, there are six doom crows who feel the need to be Seen To Be In Mourning.

You are welcome to write one upon the subject of what a pain in the ass I am. ;-D
