Congratulations are in order for the Gentlemen Barons of Gyldenholt. The Board is developing the venues for further discussion on same-gender leadership in the SCA. http://www.scatoday.net/node/21565  It's a start.

Here's the tangent MY brain went off on, however. I am Inspirationally Unequal. Technically.  (My apologies to anyone who thinks I am trying to co-opt their cause. I have somewhere I am going with this, honest.)

Gaius (who's either trying to email me from The Beyond this week or , most likely, whose account has been hacked by spammers) once told me I'd make an excellent queen. That statement was worth a couple of halfhearted fight practices and a hearty "I'm too old for this shit."   I've been playing in the SCA since autumn of 1995 and I don't fight and I don't have someone willing to fight for me. So much for teetering on a pedestal and being someone's potential Queen of Love And Beauty (TM), right?

The truth is, many of us don't get to be part of the monarchy pool as it is. We're not part of the fighter/consort population of the SCA for any number of reasons having nothing to do with gender: health, age, different interests within the game, you name it. So why not let the ones who do want to fight or be fought for go forth and do so? Bad reigns? We get 'em already. "Gaming the system?" We've got every-other-reign dukes already. And we get through it.
 
This? Oh, that's the rose that His Highness sent me on Saturday. It's hit its peak today and smells heavenly.

Inspiration is where one finds it. It doesn't need to be on a pedestal, or sitting on a throne. It can be anywhere and anyone.

Vivat! for the Baronial decision. Booh! that the Kingdom decision has been delayed.
Why is the issue of Gay marriage even an issue? I fight mostly for someone who is gay and is not my partner simply because I find that person inspirational (and my wife has no interest in watching me fight - as she says "I can watch you lying flat on your back at home")
Same sex or different; its the inspiration and not a mundane relationship that we fight for.
I was also horrified by the Gallup statistics on approval for gay marriage: not the figures; the fact that there are enough people who claim not to know anyone who is gay to be statistically significant - evidently America is even more different than I thought.
We had a discussion (just around the banner making workshop - not formal) in our Shire and couldn't come up with any valid reason to continue the ban and ended with a "what if" of who we could fight for if allowed to choose from both genders. Some interesting names from among the "Never going to be Royal" came up.
Of course the whole thing may be moot if it ever comes to Law. Informal legal opinion is that the Various legal systems of Drachenwald would be all over this like a rash if Formal legal approaches were made, and it only takes one person to get so disgruntled about the whole thing that they give up waiting for the BOD to do the decent thing.

Roses!

His Highness has also sent roses to me when no one else did. And He does it so earnestly. I jokingly wonder if He just needs places for ALL of His roses to go, since He loves to fight as often as possible and trains so hard! Regardless, I love His thoughtfulness. That, in itself, is inspiring--The Gallery approves!

I believe the term "Booyaka!" is appropos in this context.

Well, if it's a side effect of getting as many bouts in as he can, I don't mind it one bit. What's not to love about his joyful enthusiasm for this game we play.

That's one thing I love about Miles--he's always out there fighting and fighting and practicing and fighting.... He's like the Energizer Bunny in a white belt. I really admire his dedication to service, being a Royal peer, the love of the game, and his embrace of youth. It's an honor to call him my brother.

To deny a member of our group the opportunity to honorably fight for their true Inspiration is a tarnish on what the Crown respresents to me. Honor, Prowess, and Courage should never compete with Courtesy, Compassion, and Generosity.
